Taman Tasik Perdana is located at Jalan Perdana, Kuala Lumpur. This beautiful lake gardens is the brainchild of Alfred Venning, the British State Treasurer in the 1880s. It is the city’s most popular park!

Built around an artificial lake, it encompasses 91.6 hectares of undulating greenery interspersed with flowering shrubs, shady trees, exceptional botanical gardens, and other notable features.

The Panggung Anniversary, set in a secluded valley, is a regular venue for musical and cultural performances. There is a children’s playground, jogging tracks, exercise stations, and rowing boats. Among the notable gardens and places of interest in the Gardens are the following:

The Orchid Garden

The Orchid Garden showcases thousands of international varieties of the most beautiful flower in the world, the Orchid! The garden showcases over 800 species of Orchids from Malaysia alone. Orchids are also availbale for sale on weekends. The garden is opened from 10am to 6pm daily and the best part is that there is no admission fees.

The Hibiscus Garden

It is a small terraced garden which houses more than 500 varieties of rare and exotic blooms in a riot of colour and shades. The hibiscus is known here as the Bunga Raya and represents the national flower for Malaysia. Also found in the Hibiscus Garden is an exhibition hall and an information center.

The Butterfly Park

The Butterfly Park houses some 6,000 butterflies of over 120 species. The butterfly sanctuary, located next to the Bird Park, is a close imitation of the natural habitat for butterflies with more than 15,000 plants from some 100 species, used to recreate the Malaysian rain forest atmosphere.

Facilities for visitors include a car park, restaurant, a showroom and an insect museum. There is also a nursery and breeding area for butterflies.

Kuala Lumpur Bird Park

Kuala Lumpur Bird Park, one of the largest bird park in South-East Asia, holds thousands of birds representing nearly every major species of this part of the world.

Located opposite the Orchid Garden, it holds thousands of birds representing nearly every major species of this part of the world, within it’s beautifully landscaped area, designed to bear a close likeness to nature with trees, flowering shrubs and miniature waterfalls.

Malaysian National Monument

Also within the Lake Gardens, one of the world’s largest freestanding bronze sculptures. The monument was constructed in 1966 to honor those who died in Malaysia’s struggle against Communist insurgency in the 1950s. Designed by Felix de Weldon, this 15.54 meter high bronze statuary depicts seven men from the Malayan security forces, each symbolising the seven qualities of leadership. A moat, filled with fountains and ornamental water-lilies surround the entire structure.

Beside the National Monument are the ASEAN Gardens and the Memorial Tun Razak, which houses memorabilia of Malaysia’s second Prime Minister, the late Tun Abdul Razak Hussein. Formerly called the ‘Seri Taman’, the memorial is previously the official residence of Malaysia’s second Prime Minister, the late Tun Razak or more popularly known as ‘The Father of Development’.

The memorial preserves a vast collection of his personal and official memorabilia. Also on display is his private collection of walking sticks and pipes. Outside are some larger items – his motor boat, golf-cart and in recognition of his personal interest and contribution to the Federal Land Development scheme, a replica of a FELDA settler’s home!

The Deer Park

Located in the undulating slopes and sprawling valley of the Lake Gardens. Close to the bubbling stream at the edge of the valley are several mousedeer. The mousedeer is the world’s smallest hoofed animal and a popular figure in local folklore due to its legendary wit.

Carcosa Seri Negara

Perched on a hilltop overlooking the Lake Gardens is Carcosa Seri Negara, a pair of nineteenth-century British colonial mansions. The Carcosa Seri Negara was the residence of the British Governor and British High Commissioners. Today, it has been converted into an exclusive hotel.

Secrets of Tasik Perdana

Have you been to the Herb and Conservatory Gardens in Taman Tasik Perdana? I guess you haven’t. Not many are aware of this two beautiful places, despite their existence in the Lake Gardens for almost a decade already!

It’s located near the popular children’s playground on one side and the lake’s main activity centre on the other.

The Herbs Conservatory Gardens are usually accidentally found by casual passers-by or visited with intent only by special interest groups like horticulturists, traditional medical practitioners or students.

The Herb Garden houses at least 200 species of plants! It is popular among local medical practitioners or those who have faith in herbal remedies, especially among Chinese and Malays.

Most herbs in the garden are well labelled, carrying the local and scientific names and information on their efficacy on the particular health problem. There are cat’s whiskers, kaduk, grandmother’s earrings, mother-in-law tongue, basil, roselle, jarah, tulang-tulang and many more!

The adjacent Conservatory Garden looks like a well-landscaped garden with a combination of bigger and richer trees and trimmings like benches, shades, pergolas and ponds.It houses almost all species including ferns, creepers, raintrees, shrubs and bamboos with focus on those requiring concerted effort to cultivate and conserve.

How to Get to Tasik Perdana

If you are coming from Damansara Highway, you will need to park at the National Museum carpark. Alternatively, park at the designated area and walk through a tunnel to reach the gardens.

If you are coming from Petaling Street, head towards Cenderawasih Street and then to Kelab Perdana Street.
