Millenium Monument Putrajaya – Tugu Alaf Baru
The Millenium Monument Putrajaya is perhaps one of the most well-kept secrets of Putrajaya. You can’t even find it in Putrajaya’s official website! The obelisk-like, amber-coloured monument was built as a timeline, marking Malaysia’s historical milestones from the Malacca sultanate’s formation, through independence, and the present day. ![]()
The Millenium Monument was designed by the world famous architect, Dr Ken Yeang to usher in the new millennium. However, due to some unknown reasons, the Millenium Monument was only open to the public on August 27, 2005. I was told that there were several time capsules been embedded at the tower site at the turn of the 21st Century. The messages in the time capsules will only be open and read in year 2020.
The Millenium Monument is primarily meant to be a way for the younger generation to learn about the country’s history, the sacrifices and success stories of local leaders, inspiring them to strive for higher achievements in the future.
The majestic monument is built in the shape of a hibiscus, the national flower. It is 68m tall and stands in a 25 hectare park in Precinct 2, Putrajaya. The tapering tower is divided into the primary eras of pre-independence, the past (1957-1970), the present (1971-2020) and the future (2020 onwards). The monument is constructed of solid metal and strengthened with metal structures.
Beautiful Carvings
The tower has carvings on its body to depict the nation’s historical moments. The Millenium Monument is also functions as a light house as it has a bright 360 degree rotating light that can be seen from a lot of places in Putrajaya because of its strategic location at the edge of a lake.
The surrounding area of the monument was built to offer facilities like a restaurant, lakeside promenade, information kiosk, parking bays for cars and buses, gazebos and public washrooms.
The Millenium Monument is visible from the Putra Mosque towards the south, and the Seri Wawasan Bridge from the North. During the day, you can see the monument tower glimmers in gold as it reflects the sunlight. At night, the monument is lit up in vibrant pink. The view of the monument coupled with the surrounding bridges makes the Putrajaya skyline an impressive sight
If you’re an avid photographer, you will fall in love with the lovely monument. Just visit it at night, and you’re bound to be captivated with the magnificent panorama of the monument as well as the fantastic views of Putrajaya from the lower decks of the tower all round.
We simply love the Millenium Monument! Despite the scorching hot weather last Saturday, I managed to capture a lot of stunning photos of the monument.
