The Kuala Lumpur Railway Station is a beautiful Mughal-style railway station located at Jalan Sultan Hishamuddin, Kuala Lumpur. The National Mosque, Station Hotel and Dayabumi Complex are among the nearby landmarks. The designers were Arthur Benison Hubback (AB Hubback), the same British architect who designed most of the distinctive buildings of Mughal architecture in Kuala Lumpur, including Masjid Jamek, Old City Hall, Old High Court and Selangor Railway Office building (presently Textile Museum). The Kuala Lumpur Railway Station building is a unique blend of various architectures, and has elements from the 13th and 14th century Ottoman and Mughal empires as well as Gothic and ancient Greek designs. Its high and wide verandahs is well adapted to the tropical climate. The rhythmic arched colonades wrapping the verandahs give the building on its facade an interesting shadow interplay. There are five domes sit majestically atop the building, each surrounded by four spiral columns of orthodox Greek design. The Kuala Lumpur Railway Station is definitely a delight for all photography buffs! Its domes and minarets’ unique features make it one of the most photograph railway station in the world. The station housed a linear set of halls with the platforms were out behind. [...]

Pudu Prison is a classic example of some of the earliest colonial prisons. If you’ve been out exploring Kuala Lumpur, you might notice the fading and peeling murals depicting scenes of nature, on the wall circling the prison. The wall murals of tropical scenes painted by the prisoners took them over a year to paint using 2000 liters of paint! The murals entitled the inmates to won a place in the Guinness Book of Records, for painting the world’s longest mural along the prison’s walls. Pudu Prison Kuala Lumpur was built in 1895 and was used to house criminals and as a location for administering corporal punishment through rattan caning. The prison is shaped like a butterfly or an X with three levels and 240 cells. Pudu Prison was designed to house 600 inmates initially but with additional cells, its capacity was increased to 2,000. Dark Execution Chamber The Pudu Prison main entrance was situated in a two-storied building. The Administrative Offices was on the ground floor and on the top floor, six cells for European and Eurasian prisoners and two small rooms for storage of prison records.
The National History Museum Kuala Lumpur or Muzium Sejarah Negara is the second national museum in Malaysia after Muzium Negara. It is located opposite Dataran Merdeka in Kuala Lumpur. The museum’s building was previously an old building of 100 years old which had a history of its own. Originally, the building was a small structure built with wood and bricks. Historical notes and inscriptions revealed that this building was first erected in 1888 to house the headquarters of the Chartered Bank of India, Australia and China, which was the first commercial bank operating in Kuala Lumpur. The bank is now known as the Standard Chartered Bank of Malaysia. The Chartered Bank of India, Australia and China opened its doors in Kuala Lumpur in 1888. In 1891, the bank moved it’s business to the new premises at the present National History Museum site for security considerations because it is close to the police headquarters on Bluff Road (now Jalan Bukit Aman). However, the original old building structure was torn down and it was rebuilt using a combination of the characteristics typical of the Mughal and Islamic architecture. The person responsible for designing the new building was A.C Norman, who was at [...]

The National Palace Kuala Lumpur or Istana Negara is the official residence of His Majesty, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, the King of Malaysia. It stands on a 28 acre site, located at a commanding position on the slope of a hill of Bukit Petaling overlooking the Klang River. The National Palace was built in 1928 and was originally the residence of a millionaire, Chan Wing who was once a Chinese immigrant who made his money in tin mines and other businesses. Chan Wing built the huge house to accommodate his large family, including his 26 wives, whom he brought to Kuala Lumpur from Hong Kong in the 1920s. During the Japanese Occupation from 1942-1945, the mansion was used as the Japanese Officers’ mess. During World War II, the Chan family fled to India and only returned after the war. Often referred to as the house on the hill, the present Istana Negara was acquired by the British Army for the Royal Airforce (R.A.F.) after the war. The building was then bought by the Selangor State Government and after being renovated, it became the palace of His Majesty the Sultan of Selangor until 1957.
